Delicious traditional dishes to try when visiting India
Chaat
Synonymous with the street food vendors of Delhi, Chaat is one of the most mouth-watering savory snacks in India. Although there is a huge variety of different types of chat now, the original chat is an incredible combination of potato wedges, crispy fried bread and chickpeas, garnished with fresh coriander leaves, yogurt and dried ginger tamarind sauce. It is highly recommended to try this Indian dish while in India.
Chicken butter
For those who really love chicken, this next one is just for you! Originally created at the Moti Mahal restaurant in Delhi, Butter Chicken is also known as Murgh Makhani. It generally consists of leftover Tandoori chicken cooked in a ‘gravy’ made up of tomatoes, cream, various spices and of course butter. Over the years, this dish has grown in popularity and is now considered one of the most outstanding Indian dishes. Butter chicken lovers will tell you that the perfect dish is a balance of velvety texture and tangy flavor.
Dal Mahaney
Most foodies around the world have heard of or tasted dal. However, there is nothing like tasting the original dish in India. Dal means lentil in Hindi, and this soup-like delicacy is made by simmering small black lentils for several hours. Although there are many variations of this lentil dish, dal mahani is in a league of its own. It’s been said for decades that it’s truly the best of the best, so it’s often only used at special events like weddings. In addition, Dal Makhani is very healthy as it is rich in calcium and fiber. Be sure to try this one too.
Samosa
Samosas are South Asian fried pastries filled with savory fillings such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, chicken and other meats or lentils. They are generally triangular in shape, but nowadays they come in many different shapes depending on the region of India. Samosas are more popular as a snack or appetizer and are mostly served hot during tea time. Did you know that as far back as the 13th century, samosas were eaten by royalty? In India, they were eaten by nobles as part of a great feast.
Masala Chai
Of course, our list wouldn’t be complete without including one type of Indian drink, so naturally we recommend Masala Chai. This tea is made by boiling black tea with milk and water along with a mixture of various aromatic herbs and spices. Many say that masala chai appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, but since then it has gained great popularity in various countries around the world. It is also India’s most famous export and can be found in many places, such as high-end restaurants and the local train station. In fact, there is nothing better than sipping a hot cup of authentic masala chai in the morning.
