Lately when a big holiday is just around the corner and it’s not enough to just throw two or three clothes in your hand luggage, we all ask ourselves how to pack well and properly. Answer: The smartest way is a checklist – and many systems.

Pack your bags: Think first and write a list
Throwing clothes haphazardly into your suitcase while traveling is rarely a good idea. Before you start packing, you should first think about what you really need on site: What is the weather like at the vacation destination? What activities are there on vacation? How often should you change clothes? A nice dress for dinner at a chic boutique hotel might be necessary, but sturdy shoes for hiking. Check the hotel well before you travel: if the accommodation room has a hairdryer, for example, you don’t need to bring it with you, which saves space. If you write a list now and check everything in order, you can be sure that you won’t forget anything really important.
Pack in correct order
Heavy items like books or shoes are always at the bottom of the suitcase, light clothes or blouses at the top. Anyone who takes this packing technique to heart not only prevents crumpled clothes, but also saves space.
Store cosmetics safely and well
Shower gel or perfume in your luggage is as annoying as it is unnecessary. But what reliably protects this simple suitcase from accidents? You are sure to have a solution to the problem at home: cling film! Simply unscrew the cap from the shampoo or bottle, place some foil tightly over the opening and screw the cap back on. The foil is now sure to keep it where the liquid is!
Don’t go to the limit
Never overfill your suitcase, especially when you go on vacation. Anyone who scratches the maximum weight allowed on an outward journey and has trouble keeping it off is guaranteed extra baggage on the return journey as one souvenir or another always ends up in the suitcase. Alternative: Take a foldable, space-saving and lightweight travel bag with you: you can fill it with holiday souvenirs if needed and use it as hand luggage on the return journey.
Pad shoes with socks
Do you store pairs of shoes in plastic bags? Not a good idea, because firstly the shoes are quite heavy as a pair and secondly they dent more easily. There is a different way to pack optimally: we always recommend having sneakers and co. Individually in suitcases. You should then fold your socks together and use them or other small items to pad your shoes – not only does this make the best use of your luggage space, but the shoes also keep their shape. Extra tip: Disposable shower caps (available at almost every hotel) are a great alternative to plastic bags as a hygienic cover for the soles of your shoes.
